Road Trip Reads

Always the hard part... sorting through which books to bring
How many books can you place in a pack? Well, not enough is the answer. One of the few concerns we had about sharing this year together in Costa Rica was that the kids might starve a little. Not from lack of food, but from lack of their favourite books and newly discovered stories. Happily, we'll be staying in a town with a local library. Also, we'll take full advantage of our libraries back home, accessing their (increasingly good catalogue of) ebooks.

For our road trip, we've selected a couple of children's books set in or authored by someone from each state and country we'll be traveling through. Hopefully, this will help us get to know the places a little more deeply, add colour, character and a sense of history and place. We're also going to visit an independent bookstore in each place and find out what the local kids are reading. Send us your suggestions (for books or bookstores) if you have some!

Here is our list:

Minnesota - Horns & Wrinkles by Joseph Helgerson and  Minn of the Mississippi by Holling Clancy Holling

South Dakota - Saving the Buffalo by Albert Marrin and By the Shores of Silver Lake by Laura Ingalls Wilder

Wyoming - Paint the Wind by Pam Munoz Ryan and My Friend Flicka by Mary O'Hara

Colorado - The Fear Place by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor and Dipper of Copper Creek by Jean Craighead George

Utah - The Great Brain by John D. Fitzgerald and Dragon Slippers by Jessica-day George

Arizona - Brighty of Grand Canyon by Marguerite Henry

California - Kildee House by Rutherford G. Montgomery and Barbara Conney and One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia and The Alchemyst by Michael Scott

Baja, California, Mexico - The Black Pearl by Scott O'Dell

Mexico - What the Moon Saw by Laura Reseau and La Linea by Ann Jaramillo

Guatemala - Most Beautiful Place in the World by Ann Cameron and Journey of Dreams by Marge Pellegrino

Central America - Zoo at the Edge of the World by Eric Khan Gale

Costa Rica - Walk in The Rainforest by Kristin Joy Pratt-Serafini and Tortillas and Lullabies by Lynn Reiser and Corazones Valientes and Darwin Arkwright and the Insidious Bleck by AJ Hartley

  2. Hi, all!

We had the book decision problem too! When we come visit, I think we will all enjoy the injection of fresh literature, won't we? Jet only brought books she had already read, to avoid wasting space on a "bad" book. She has read through her whole set several times, already.

Zay is still working her way through the twenty-eight (so far) Warriors books by Erin Hunter, so she doesn't talk to us much. But I won't let the kindle go to the beach, so she is mad every time we leave the house. She has not gotten the hang of having 2 books on hte go. Until this week, when she tore through the Bunnicula books I brought to read to Tayo--except she read them so fast there was no time to take them to the beach! Oh dear.

For books, I was thinking of California, and Steinbeck came to mind. In my memory he wrote so lovingly of the sea creatures of the Coast. Maybe the kids would like the Red Pony? it is partly a memoir of his childhood. Or maybe Log of the Sea of Cortez? or Cannery Row? Not exactly kid lit, I guess. I remember his writing being so powerful and spare and full of great caring for lost souls. I was utterly obsessed with his writing when i was in high school.

Also, for Costa Rica, what about The Divide, Elizabeth Kay? It starts in Costa Rica, and then moves to an alternate world. I liked it. It's a trilogy for kids.

I'm happy you have a little house on the prairie book! We are watching the show as a family, and really enjoying it. The plots are so much more nuanced than I would have imagined, and we are having some great family discussions about individual choices and motivations. We have all 9 seasons, if you can believe it.

I miss you all, and can't wait to see you in a few months.

Are you going to Wind Caves in Wyoming? I went there. I liked it, though I liked the Carlsbad Cavern even more.
